Listen In: Interview with Judge Edward H. Merrigan on Veterans Court

Legal News & Review, iHeart Radio & 1230AM WBZT ~ Fri. Aug 14, 6-7pmET
The Honorable County Judge Edward H. Merrigan, an 18-year veteran and Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, is the presiding judge for Broward's Veterans Court.

Broward County Veterans Court in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida is a voluntary 12-18 month program designed for veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and are currently experiencing legal problems due to suffering from behavioral, mental health, or substance abuse disorders. An alternative to the traditional court setting, Veterans Court provides services such as intensive probation supervision, counseling and peer mentoring, random drug and alcohol testing, medication monitoring and social services. The Court promotes sobriety, recovery, and stability by providing veterans with the tools to move forward with their lives while satisfying the legal requirements of the court process.
The program is designed to help Broward veterans facing misdemeanor and non-violent felony charges get help for problems that may be unraveling their lives, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, traumatic brain injuries and homelessness.
In addition to intensive supervision, the court aims to connect veterans to various services and resources available to them such as mental health services through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and peer mentoring through Impact Broward: RSVP Veterans Helping Veterans. Some might need counseling, job training, medical treatment, housing or other assistance. Volunteer mentors can be assigned to monitor veterans so they can hopefully avoid further problems with the law.
Broward County Veterans Court is one of many Veterans Court programs across the nation, modeled after Drug Court programs that were originally founded in Miami, Florida in the 1980s.
